Police arrest drivers over overloading

Kampala, Uganda — The Uganda Police Force has issued a strong warning to motorists over the dangerous practice of carrying excess passengers, particularly in front seats, saying it poses a serious threat to road safety.

In a statement shared on X, traffic police spokesperson Michael Kananura said several drivers have already been arrested and are currently in custody awaiting court proceedings for violating traffic regulations.

Kananura noted that overloading vehicles in a manner that interferes with the driver compromises safe driving and significantly increases the risk of road crashes, which could lead to loss of life.

“Carrying excess passengers, especially in front seats in a way that interferes with the driver, is a serious traffic violation,” he said.

Police also raised concern over tactics used by some drivers and passengers to evade enforcement. According to Kananura, some motorists deliberately avoid checkpoints by using alternative routes, while passengers at times disembark before police checks and rejoin vehicles afterward to continue the illegal practice.

In response, the police have announced stricter enforcement measures. Drivers have been directed to immediately stop overloading vehicles, with authorities warning that offenders will face arrest and prosecution rather than on-the-spot fines.

Passengers were also urged to take responsibility by refusing to board overloaded vehicles or those operating in violation of safety regulations, even if it means delays or higher transport costs.

The Uganda Police Force says it will continue routine operations to crack down on unsafe road practices, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility among all users.

The latest directive comes amid ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents across the country, many of which have been attributed to reckless driving and disregard for traffic rules.
