Kampala — Uganda’s National Drug Authority (NDA) has shut down more than 70 illegal drug outlets and impounded medicines worth over Shs70 million during a major enforcement operation in southwestern Uganda.

According to NDA spokesperson Abiaz Rwamwiri, the crackdown was conducted alongside the authority’s enforcement team across the districts of Kiruhura District, Ibanda District, and Kazo District.

Rwamwiri said the operation targeted unlicensed drug shops operating outside regulatory frameworks.

“I joined the NDA enforcement team in the Southwestern region where we have carried out compliance enforcement operations, closing over 70 illegal drug outlets,” he said in a post shared online.

He added that large quantities of medicines were seized during the operation.

“About 250 boxes of assorted medicine worth over 70 million shillings were impounded,” Rwamwiri noted.

The NDA has repeatedly warned that illegal drug outlets pose serious risks to public health, including the sale of counterfeit, expired, or improperly stored medicines. (nda.or.ug)

Authorities say such enforcement operations are part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with national drug regulations and protect the public from unsafe pharmaceutical products.

The agency has urged the public to seek medical services only from licensed pharmacies and to report suspected illegal drug outlets to authorities.

Operations are expected to continue in other parts of the country as the regulator intensifies its crackdown on non-compliant operators.
