Court to rule on Agasirwe bail on March 18

The Criminal Division of the High Court of Uganda – Criminal Division has scheduled March 18, 2026 to deliver a ruling on the bail application filed by former Special Investigations Unit commandant Nickson Agasirwe Karuhanga.

Agasirwe is facing charges connected to the murder of Joan Kagezi, the senior prosecutor who was shot dead by unidentified assailants in March 2015 in Kiwatule while returning home from work.

The matter was mentioned before Justice Isaac Muwata on Thursday, who confirmed that both the defence and prosecution teams had already filed their written submissions through the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS), the judiciary’s online case management platform.

The state was represented by Chief State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka, who was absent from the session after requesting an adjournment to attend to other prosecutorial duties in a separate court.

However, Justice Muwata declined the adjournment request, stating that all necessary submissions were already on record.

“The relevant submissions required for court determination are already filed through the ECCMIS system,” the judge said before setting the ruling date.

Agasirwe is currently on remand pending the court’s decision on whether he will be granted temporary release on bail as the murder trial continues.

The accused is alleged to have participated in the killing of prosecutor Kagezi, who was a key state attorney involved in prosecuting terrorism-related cases, including trials connected to the 2010 Kampala bombings.

The upcoming ruling will determine whether Agasirwe will remain in custody or be released under strict bail conditions while the substantive trial proceeds in the High Court.
