KAMPALA — Candidates vying for the 92nd Guild Presidency at Makerere University have been urged to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns following an official briefing by the Dean of Students.

The briefing, held on Thursday afternoon, was led by the Dean of Students, Winifred Kabumbuli, who addressed all duly nominated candidates ahead of the highly anticipated student leadership race.

A total of 13 candidates were confirmed for the guild presidency, including Atuha Cohen, Bulumba Timothy, Kadondi Gracious, Kyajja Peter Claver, Lubango Jimmy, Mbabazi Tracy, Mujuzi Mike Fulgensio, Nganga Mark, Nyaika Daniel, Serunkuma Timothy, Ssemanda Ashiraf, Tebakor Jimmy Prince, and Tumukunde Hannah Karema.

Dr. Kabumbuli emphasised the importance of adhering to electoral guidelines, cautioning candidates against misconduct that could disrupt campus harmony.

She specifically warned against defacing walls and rival campaign posters, organising large processions, engaging in hate speech, and spreading misinformation or disinformation.

Candidates were also advised to avoid violence, noise pollution, and the involvement of non-students in campaign activities—practices that have previously marred student elections.

The Chairperson of the 92nd Guild Electoral Commission, Maureen Owomugisha, reiterated the need for strict compliance with electoral rules to ensure a credible and fair process.

Meanwhile, Chief Security Officer Geoffrey Kaheebwa commended the candidates for their conduct so far but urged continued discipline. He directed that any campaign processions be confined to the main campus and should not disrupt traffic flow or business operations in surrounding areas.

The briefing marks the official start of a closely watched campaign period, with students expected to engage candidates on policy ideas and leadership vision as the university prepares to elect its 92nd Guild President.
