KAMPALA — Police in Kampala have arrested a suspected robber and recovered Shs21 million believed to have been stolen from a businessman during a robbery incident earlier this week.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police, the suspect—whose identity has been withheld pending further investigations—was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation conducted by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the arrest followed a complaint filed by a businessman who reported being robbed of a large sum of money by a group of criminals within the city centre.

“Through coordinated intelligence and surveillance, our officers managed to track down one of the suspects. During the arrest, a search was conducted and Shs21 million in cash was recovered, which is believed to be part of the money stolen from the victim,” Owoyesigyire said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the robbery occurred when the victim was transporting money intended for business transactions. The suspects allegedly trailed him before attacking and robbing him of the cash.

Police said the suspect is currently in custody as detectives continue searching for other accomplices believed to have been involved in the crime.

Authorities added that the recovered money has been secured as evidence and will be returned to the rightful owner after the legal process is completed.

“We are actively pursuing the remaining suspects and urge members of the public with information that could assist in the investigations to come forward,” Owoyesigyire added.

Police have also cautioned the public, particularly business people handling large amounts of cash, to take extra precautions and where possible use secure banking channels or seek police escort when transporting money.

The suspect is expected to be charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony once investigations are concluded.
