The suspect, identified as Warder Moses Anguyo, had been on the run since February 2026 when he allegedly opened fire on his supervisors at Kiboga Prison before fleeing the facility.

Background to the killings

According to the Uganda Prisons Service, the incident occurred at around 10:00am when the warder reportedly turned his gun on senior officers following a confrontation while on duty.

The attack claimed the lives of: Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, Principal Officer Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, spouse of the Officer-in-Charge and a child who later succumbed to injuries

Authorities said the suspect fled immediately after the shooting, prompting a nationwide manhunt involving multiple security agencies.

Manhunt and bounty

In response, the Uganda Prisons Service announced a UGX 10 million reward for information leading to his arrest, urging the public to cooperate with investigators.

Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine earlier stated that security agencies had “shared information… to all security agencies” and were determined to apprehend the suspect.

Arrest in DR Congo

Latest reports indicate that the fugitive has now been arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo, bringing an end to weeks of pursuit. Details of the arrest, including how the suspect crossed the border and the circumstances of his capture, are still emerging.

Security officials are yet to issue a comprehensive statement on extradition arrangements or the timeline for his return to Uganda to face trial.

Ongoing investigations

Authorities maintain that investigations into the motive behind the shooting are ongoing. Preliminary findings had suggested the incident may have been triggered by a workplace reprimand, although analysts say deeper issues could be involved.

The killings sent shockwaves across Uganda’s correctional services, raising concerns about discipline, mental health, and internal systems within security institutions.

More details are expected as officials release further updates on the suspect’s custody and prosecution.
