Mityana officials arrested for giving jobs to relatives

MITYANA, Uganda — The State House Anti Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force has arrested four senior officials from Mityana District on allegations of abuse of office and nepotism linked to irregular recruitment practices.

In a statement released on Friday, the Anti-Corruption Unit said the arrests followed preliminary investigations into alleged manipulation of district recruitment processes to favour relatives and close associates.

The officials apprehended are: Anna Miriam Nassali, Vice Chairperson, LCV, Mityana District, Dr Lwassampijja Fred, Chairperson, District Service Commission, Mukiibi Hussein, Secretary to the Commission and Ssekibuule Andrew, Member of the District Service Commission.

According to investigators, the suspects allegedly conspired to influence recruitment decisions in favour of their children, spouses, and other relatives — actions said to have undermined merit-based selection and fair competition for public service positions.

Affected Positions

Some of the positions reportedly affected include: Municipal Labour Officer, Education Assistants, Accountant, Mityana Municipality, Head Teachers and Teaching positions in various schools across the district.

Authorities say the appointments were made without adhering to established employment and appointment guidelines. Additionally, the suspects allegedly failed to disclose conflicts of interest to the Commission, contrary to provisions under the Leadership Code Act and the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders.

The Anti-Corruption Unit noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the alleged irregularities and to assess the impact on district administration.

Officials say the operation is part of broader efforts to restore accountability and integrity in public service recruitment and to ensure that qualified candidates are given equal and transparent opportunities in government employment.

The suspects are expected to be formally charged once investigations are concluded.
