The Government of Uganda announced the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday, January 17, 2026, and restored nationwide internet services, prompting a security alert for American citizens living in or visiting the country.

In a statement released following the announcement, U.S. authorities urged citizens to remain cautious despite the restoration of connectivity and the conclusion of the electoral process.

“U.S. citizens are encouraged to continue to exercise enhanced precautions and to avoid any demonstrations,” the alert said, noting that post-election periods can remain unpredictable even after official results are declared.

The advisory emphasizes the need for heightened personal security awareness, particularly in urban centers and areas where political gatherings may occur. Americans were advised to closely follow developments through reliable local media outlets and to steer clear of crowds and demonstrations.

“Maintaining a low profile and being aware of your surroundings are essential during this period,” the statement added. “Avoiding large gatherings can significantly reduce the risk of being caught in unrest.”

The alert also underscored the importance of preparedness. U.S. citizens were advised to keep their mobile phones fully charged, save emergency contact numbers, and carry proper identification at all times.

“American citizens should ensure they have a valid U.S. passport with a current Ugandan visa readily available,” the advisory said.

Authorities indicated that the situation will continue to be monitored closely and that additional updates will be provided as necessary. For now, U.S. citizens in Uganda are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize personal safety as the country navigates the post-election period.
