A serious road traffic accident involving a passenger train and a motor vehicle left one person dead and three others injured on Friday, 19th December 2025, the Jinja Road Police have confirmed.

The collision occurred at Wankoko Railway Crossing along Spring Road in Bugolobi, under the jurisdiction of Jinja Road Police.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the passenger train was travelling from Kampala towards Mukono when it collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero (registration number UBF 582X) coming from the Luzira side heading towards Kampala. The impact reportedly pushed the vehicle approximately 200 metres off the road.

The vehicle was carrying four occupants, identified as Gardener Mathew (male adult), Savana Gardener (female adult, co-driver), and two children. All were United States citizens working with the NGO Baptism Mission in Uganda. The victims were rushed to Rubis Hospital along the Lugogo Bypass, where Savana Gardener was pronounced dead upon arrival, while the others received medical attention for their injuries.

Preliminary investigations suggest that careless driving and failure to follow hand signals from a Railway Police officer on duty at the crossing may have contributed to the crash. The findings are still under investigation and are subject to confirmation once the inquiry is complete.

The Railway Police visited and documented the crash scene, and statements are being recorded from relevant witnesses. Authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations progress.

The Uganda Police Force extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the tragic accident.
