Kampala, Uganda — The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has recovered more than UGX 335.6 million from public officials who had failed to refund misused government funds, in a renewed push to enforce accountability in public service.

The recoveries follow a directive issued on March 16 requiring 202 officials to appear before the IG and reconcile outstanding balances by March 31 or face legal action. The funds in question, totaling over UGX 2.36 billion, were reportedly diverted from public service delivery.

In a statement released on April 8, the IG confirmed that 62 officials have so far made payments. Of these, 38 cleared their balances in full, contributing UGX 214 million, while 24 made partial repayments amounting to UGX 121.6 million.

Despite the progress, the IG noted that 140 officials have not complied with the directive. Among them, two individuals have instead surrendered properties, which are currently undergoing valuation as part of the recovery process.

The Inspectorate, led by Inspector General of Government Naluzze Aisha Batala, has issued a stern warning to the remaining defaulters, signaling imminent legal action.

Officials who fail to comply are expected to face charges including disobedience of lawful orders and abuse of office, as authorities intensify efforts to combat misuse of public resources.

The IG said the recoveries underscore its commitment to promoting transparency and integrity in government institutions, adding that the crackdown is part of a broader anti-corruption drive that has seen billions of shillings recovered in recent months.

The latest developments highlight growing pressure on public officials to account for government funds, as Uganda strengthens enforcement mechanisms in the fight against corruption.
