The Kanyanya – Kawempe Chief Magistrates’ court has remanded the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) head of institutions, Akiso Benjamin, and Ismail Mayanja, also a party member, over allegedly inciting people to commit offences.

Akiso and Mayanja, who were paraded before the court on Tuesday, have been charged with incitement to commit an offence contrary to section 21(2) of the Penal Code Act.

Prosecution told the court that Akiso Benjamin, Mayanja Ismail and others still at large on the 2nd day of February 2026 at Wandegeya centre in the Kampala district, without lawful excuse, published banners and flags written in words that incite the public to riot or do unlawful assembly as they shouted Museveni must go, free political prisoners, demand our victory.

The duo have been remanded until February 17, 2026, when the case will come up for further hearing and bail application.

However, the NUP Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya has criticised the charges and remand through a post on his X account.

“Our Head of Institutions, comrade @AkisoBenjamin and comrade Mayanja Ismail have been remanded by the court in Kanyanya. Their crime? Demonstrating peacefully against injustice and impunity!” he posted.
