KAMPALA — Security agencies have arrested 175 suspects in a series of operations targeting criminal gangs across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.

The operations, conducted by the Kampala Metropolitan Police together with other security agencies and local leaders, followed complaints from residents about rising cases of robbery, phone snatching and drug abuse.

According to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the first operation was carried out on March 11 in Musajjalumbwa Zone and Namayiba Bus Terminal under the Old Kampala policing area.

A total of 97 suspects were arrested and exhibits including narcotic substances, knives, a hammer and other suspected crime tools were recovered.

Another operation conducted on March 12 in Kiwatule Central Zone led to the arrest of 28 suspects suspected to be involved in narcotics abuse and related crimes.

Meanwhile, a separate joint security operation carried out during the night of March 11–12 in Seeta and Nasuti in Mukono District resulted in the arrest of 50 more suspects.

All the suspects are currently in custody pending screening and court proceedings.

Police say similar operations will continue in order to dismantle criminal networks, curb drug abuse and improve security in urban communities.

Authorities have also encouraged the public to continue sharing information with police to support crime prevention efforts.
