KAMPALA — The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has withheld the results of 351 candidates who are suspected to have been involved in examination malpractice during the 2025 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

According to UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo, the cases were reported from 47 out of the 2,452 examination centres where the exams were conducted across the country.

The results were officially released at State House Nakasero.

Odongo said the affected candidates represent 0.2 percent of the total candidature, indicating that malpractice at the A-Level stage remains relatively low.

“In accordance with Section 5(2)(b) of the UNEB Act, the results of candidates involved will be withheld pending completion of investigations,” he said.

The reported cases mainly involve receiving assistance during science practical examinations, possession of unauthorized materials, and impersonation.

UNEB said disciplinary hearings will be conducted before final decisions are made regarding the affected candidates.

Meanwhile, the board is still handling malpractice cases from other national examinations. Odongo said hearings for Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) cases are already underway, while hearings for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) cases will begin on March 16, 2026.

Earlier, UNEB chairperson Celestino Obua said the board assessed 1,402,434 candidates across the country’s three national examinations—PLE, UCE and UACE—in 2025. This represents an increase from 1,294,731 candidates in 2024.

The board also reported continued growth in candidature at the UACE level, which rose by 17.2 percent, reflecting increased access to post–O Level education and growing public confidence in national examinations.

Despite the rising number of candidates, UNEB says it remains committed to maintaining fairness, integrity and consistent grading standards in Uganda’s national assessment system.
