The presentations, held at the university’s Main Hall, brought together staff, students, and members of the public in what officials described as a transparent and competitive vetting process.

According to the university, the session was chaired by the Search Committee led by Tonny Oyana.

The candidates who presented included Winston Tumps Ireeta, Henry Alinaitwe, and Eria Hisali, who appeared in that order.

“The candidates each had the opportunity to answer questions from staff, students and members of the public,” Makerere said in an update shared on its official platforms.

Focus on transparency and accountability

The public presentations form part of Makerere’s established process for selecting senior university leadership, aimed at promoting transparency and accountability.

During the session, candidates outlined their priorities for financial management, institutional efficiency, and administrative reforms, while responding to questions from the audience on issues affecting the university.

Observers described the engagement as lively, reflecting strong interest from stakeholders in the future leadership of the institution.

Next steps in the process

The Search Committee is expected to compile its report following the presentations before forwarding recommendations to the university’s appointing authorities.

“We wish each of the candidates a successful campaign,” the university said.

The Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Administration) is a critical role responsible for overseeing the university’s financial planning, resource mobilization, and administrative functions.

The ongoing process comes at a time when Makerere continues to implement reforms aimed at strengthening governance, improving efficiency, and enhancing its position as one of Africa’s leading universities.
