GULU CITY – One person has been killed and several others injured following a violent confrontation between suspected street gang members and chapatti vendors in Pece-Laroo Division, Gulu City.

Police said the incident occurred at around 4:30am on Sunday along Cemetery Road, after a disagreement erupted between vendors and youths believed to be members of the notorious “Aguu” gang.

Preliminary information indicates that the dispute began over payment for chapati before escalating into a physical fight. During the scuffle, one suspected gang member was allegedly stabbed and later died from the injuries.

The situation reportedly worsened when other suspected gang members launched retaliatory attacks on vendors and nearby businesses. Several kiosks were vandalised and goods looted during the chaos.

Security forces were deployed to restore calm, while firefighters responded to extinguish small fires that had been set during the violence. Two injured individuals were rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.

Police confirmed that one suspect has been arrested as investigations continue into the killing and the destruction of property. Authorities said more arrests are expected.

Residents have raised alarm over the increasing activities of street gangs in Gulu City, calling on law enforcement to strengthen patrols and preventive operations.

Police have since assured the public that calm has been restored and security remains heightened in the affected area.
