Cindy McCain stepping down as WFP chief

ROME — Cindy McCain, the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), has announced her intention to step down from her leadership role at the global humanitarian organisation.

In a heartfelt statement, McCain cited health challenges as the primary reason for her departure, noting that her recovery has not reached a level that allows her to meet the “enormous demands” of the position.

“With a heavy heart, I am announcing my intention to step down as the Executive Director of the World Food Programme,” McCain stated. “I had truly hoped I could finish out my term, but my health has not recovered to a level that allows me to fully serve… This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make.”

A Legacy of Humanitarian Service

During her three-year tenure, McCain oversaw the delivery of life-saving assistance to millions of the world’s most vulnerable populations. She praised the WFP team for their ability to operate in the world’s most “dangerous, destitute, and remote locations” where others often cannot go.

Under her leadership, the organization focused on: Life-saving assistance: Reaching millions struggling with acute hunger and displacement, Global Advocacy: Serving as a voice for those in crisis-hit regions and Operational Resilience: Maintaining aid delivery despite significant global odds.

McCain expressed deep gratitude to the WFP’s donors, partners, and global staff for their unwavering commitment to the mission. While she is leaving her official post, she vowed to remain an “unwavering voice” and the “biggest champion” for those struggling with hunger worldwide.

The World Food Programme has not yet announced a specific timeline for her departure or the process for selecting a successor.
