Kampala, April 8, 2026 — Remanded National Unity Platform (NUP) figure Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has appealed for temporary release from Luzira Upper Prison to attend the burial of his wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro, who died after a prolonged illness.

In a letter addressed to Deputy Chief Justice Flavian Zeija, Mufumbiro asked the judiciary to consider his situation on humanitarian grounds, describing the request as a final duty to his late spouse.

Mufumbiro, who has been on remand since September 2025, is facing multiple charges in ongoing cases, including Criminal Case No. 1363 of 2025 and Criminal Case No. 147 of 2026.

In his appeal, he said his wife had expressed a final wish for him to be present at her burial.

“It was her final and most earnest wish,” he wrote, noting that the request was made in the presence of family members during her final moments.

He urged the courts to exercise compassion within the law and allow him temporary bail to fulfill this obligation.

“I seek not to evade justice, but to honour it in its most human form—by allowing me to perform this final duty for my wife,” Mufumbiro stated.

He also pledged to comply with any conditions that may be attached to his release.

The appeal has been copied to key judicial officials, including the Director of Public Prosecutions and his legal representatives.

As of now, there has been no official response from the judiciary, with the request drawing public attention as the family prepares for burial arrangements.
