Uganda mourns four toddlers killed in Ggaba daycare attack

Uganda is in mourning following the tragic killing of four toddlers at a daycare centre in Kampala, an incident that has shocked the nation and sparked renewed calls for tighter security in early childhood facilities.

The victims, aged between 18 months and two-and-a-half years, were attacked on April 2 at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre in the lakeside suburb of Ggaba. Police say the suspect, identified as Christopher Okello Onyup, allegedly gained access to the facility by posing as a parent before carrying out the premeditated act. He was arrested at the scene.

Authorities revealed that the suspect had reportedly visited the premises earlier and made preparations that have raised concerns about gaps in daycare safety protocols.

A somber memorial service held at Ggaba Community Church brought together grieving families, government officials, police representatives, and religious leaders. The gathering reflected the depth of national grief, as mourners paid tribute to the young lives lost.

Among those in attendance was Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, who urged the community to remain calm and united during this difficult time. He called for compassion, healing, and collective efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Government representatives also joined the service, with officials emphasizing the need for stronger oversight and security measures in childcare centres across the country.

The incident has ignited widespread public concern, with many Ugandans demanding accountability and urgent reforms to ensure the safety of children in learning institutions.

Investigations into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing. Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as the case progresses.
