NRM lawmakers complete verification ahead of Kyankwanzi retreat

Lawmakers from Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have completed a key verification and accreditation exercise ahead of a high-level retreat scheduled to take place in Kyankwanzi.

The exercise, held Monday at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, brought together newly elected Members of Parliament on the NRM ticket, as well as independent legislators aligned to the party, senior government officials, and members of the party’s Central Executive Committee.

Overseen by NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, the process involved the presentation of national identity cards and issuance of accreditation badges. Officials described the exercise as smooth and well-organised, paving the way for the legislators’ departure to Kyankwanzi.

Several senior ministers, including Jeje Odongo and Matia Kasaija, were among those who turned up for registration, many adorned in the party’s signature yellow colours.

The week-long retreat will be held at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi from April 7 to 15. It is expected to bring together both newly elected and returning MPs to align them on the party’s ideology, legislative agenda, and governance priorities ahead of the 12th Parliament.

Party officials say the retreat will also focus on strengthening caucus unity and cohesion, particularly following the NRM’s majority win in the January general elections.

Buses were stationed at Kololo to transport the legislators to Kyankwanzi, signaling the start of what party leaders describe as a critical orientation process aimed at consolidating the NRM’s legislative strategy for the new parliamentary term.

The Kyankwanzi retreat has long been a key feature of the ruling party’s internal organisation, serving as a platform to shape policy direction and reinforce discipline among its parliamentary members.
