Woman abducts newborn from Kassanda health facility

Police in Kassanda District have launched investigations into the abduction of a three-day-old baby from Kiganda Health Centre IV, where a woman posing as a medical officer allegedly stole the infant.

According to police, the incident occurred on March 15, 2026, involving a couple identified as Muhindo Joachim and Nalubowa Ruth, residents of Katosi Cell in Kiganda Town Council. The parents had taken their newborn baby girl to the health facility on March 12 after she developed complications shortly after birth.

The baby was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where she responded well to treatment before being transferred to the postnatal ward on March 14, pending discharge.

However, on March 15, an unidentified woman reportedly entered the ward disguised as a medical worker. Witnesses say she moved around the facility attending to patients and reviewing treatment notes, raising no immediate suspicion among staff and caregivers.

When she reached the infant’s bed, the suspect examined the child and reportedly informed the mother that the baby’s condition had worsened and required urgent medication that had not yet been administered. She then handed the mother UGX 10,000 to purchase the medicine from a nearby pharmacy.

Police say that while the mother was away, the suspect took advantage of her absence and fled the facility with the baby.

The matter was reported to Kiganda Police Station, prompting an active investigation by the Uganda Police Force in the Wamala Region.

Authorities are now appealing to the public for information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest and the safe recovery of the child. Police have urged anyone who may come across a woman in possession of a newborn under suspicious circumstances—particularly one not known to have recently given birth—to report immediately to the nearest police station.

Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP Kigozi Lameck confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the suspect and reunite the child with her family.
