UPDF soldier jailed, cable theft suspects arrested

Mukono, Uganda — A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier has been jailed after losing a firearm to assailants, while two suspects have been arrested in a separate case involving impersonation of electricity officials.

According to reporting by New Vision, military courts have intensified action against cases involving loss of government weapons, warning that such incidents pose a serious threat to public safety.

In a related development, police in Mukono have arrested individuals accused of posing as officials from the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to steal power infrastructure, including cables.

Authorities say the suspects targeted unsuspecting communities by pretending to carry out official operations before stealing equipment, as part of a broader pattern of organised theft affecting utility services.

Security agencies have warned the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent government or utility institutions.
