South African pop star Tyla has won the Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, held on February 1, 2026, in Los Angeles, marking her second victory in the category.
The 24-year-old singer took home the award for her hit single “Push 2 Start,” beating strong competition from top African artists including Burna Boy, Davido, Ayra Starr, Wizkid, and Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo.
In winning, Tyla becomes the first artist to claim the Best African Music Performance title twice since the category’s creation in 2024, when she won with her breakout hit “Water.”
Speaking after the win, Tyla expressed pride in her achievement and in representing African music on a global stage. In a backstage moment captured by media, she reflected on the honour of the award: “Africa… this is so insane. I’m just so lucky to be here, and I’m so proud to be African,” she said with a smile.
Her success comes at a time when African music and artists are gaining increasing international recognition, and her consecutive wins have been celebrated as milestones for the continent’s creative industries.
The Best African Music Performance category was introduced by the Recording Academy to spotlight African sounds on music’s biggest stage, and Tyla’s back-to-back victories underscore her rapidly growing influence in global pop music.
The Grammys ceremony also featured major wins across genres, with Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga among the evening’s other top winners.
