Museveni promises Kasese international airport, SGR

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to fast-track the construction of an international airport and the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kasese, promising a major boost for tourism, trade and regional connectivity.

Speaking during a campaign rally in Kasese District, the President said the government has prioritised the region for large-scale infrastructure development to unlock its economic potential and enhance its linkages with neighbouring countries.

“Kasese deserves modern infrastructure that matches its strategic importance. We shall build an international airport here and ensure the Standard Gauge Railway reaches this region,” President Museveni said. “This will support tourism, facilitate trade and open new opportunities for the people of Kasese and the entire Rwenzori sub-region.”

Museveni noted that Kasese’s proximity to the Democratic Republic of Congo and its position as a gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park make it a strong candidate for major transport investment.

He added that the government is mobilising resources and finalising technical plans for both projects, saying they align with Uganda’s long-term vision of lowering transport costs, boosting exports and supporting mineral development.

Local leaders welcomed the announcement, saying an international airport and SGR would significantly transform the district. They urged the government to expedite implementation to maximise benefits for tourism, agriculture, and cross-border trade.

The President’s pledge comes as Uganda seeks to revive its SGR ambitions and expand regional aviation infrastructure to position the country as a competitive trade and logistics hub.
