Justine Nameere declared Masaka District Woman MP-elect

NRM’s Justine Nameere was declared the winner of the Masaka District Woman Member of Parliament seat following a closely contested vote recount.

According to the final tally, Nameere polled 25,502 votes, defeating National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Nalubowa Rose, who garnered 23,176 votes.

The recount, which lasted three days, was ordered after disputes arose over the initial results. During the exercise, at least five ballot boxes were flagged for irregularities, prompting objections from some opposition candidates and agents.

Despite the concerns raised, Nameere welcomed the recount process, saying it enhanced transparency and addressed gaps as they emerged.

“I am happy with the manner in which the recount is being conducted because it is more transparent, with loopholes being addressed in real time,” Nameere said.

Speaking shortly after midnight on Monday, following her declaration, Nameere described the outcome as a landmark moment in Uganda’s electoral politics.

“My case sets a new precedent in line with modern politics,” she said, defending her declaration as Masaka City Woman MP-elect. She also referenced what she termed a “spy network,” which she said helped safeguard her vote, and outlined plans to focus on service delivery and engagement with constituents going forward.

Nameere insisted that the recount reaffirmed her victory and underscored her commitment to serve the people of Masaka, despite the controversy surrounding the election.

The opposition is yet to issue a comprehensive statement on whether it will challenge the outcome further.
