With just a day to Uganda’s presidential and parliamentary elections, Foreign Affairs Minister Gen. (Rtd) Abubakher Jeje Odongo has issued a stern warning against any attempts to subvert the democratic process, saying those who try to rig the polls do so at their own peril.

Speaking during an interview on NTV’s “Morning At NTV”, Gen. Odongo said he would not tolerate actions that undermine the will of the people.

“I have no sympathy for anyone who attempts to subvert people’s democratic rights. That’s why I mean: if anyone tries to rig the election, they do so at their own risk,” Gen. Odongo said.

The veteran politician is seeking to retain his Orungo County parliamentary seat in Amuria District as an independent candidate, after losing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries.

During the NRM primaries, Ms Teddy Anyuk Osire emerged as the party’s official flag bearer for Orungo County ahead of the 2026 General Election, prompting Gen. Odongo to run as an independent.

Gen. Odongo, who has represented Orungo County for several terms and served in various senior government positions, said his decision to contest independently was driven by his long-standing commitment to the people of the constituency.

“Leadership is about service and accountability to the people. My record speaks for itself, and I remain confident that the voters of Orungo will make their decision freely,” he added.

As the country heads into a tense election period, the minister called on electoral officials, security agencies, and political actors to uphold the law and ensure a peaceful and credible vote.

Ugandans will head to the polls on Thursday, January 15, 2026, to elect a president and members of parliament, with authorities urging calm and respect for democratic processes across the country.
