LYANTONDE — Eight people have been confirmed dead and 33 others injured following a fatal road crash involving a passenger bus and a box-body truck at Kalegero in Lwengo along the Masaka–Mbarara highway.
The accident involved a Kasaba bus, registration number UAL 492H, which was travelling from Rukungiri to Kampala at the time of the collision. According to preliminary reports, all eight were male passengers who had been seated in the front section of the bus.
The injured survivors were rushed to Lyantonde General Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kagabo confirmed the incident and said initial findings suggest the crash may have occurred after the bus struck a pothole before colliding with the oncoming truck.
However, he emphasized that investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the accident.
The Masaka–Mbarara highway is one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors, linking the central region to the western part of the country. It has also been the scene of multiple road accidents, often attributed to poor road conditions, speeding, and reckless driving.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on sections of the highway known to have damaged surfaces.
