Kampala — Security forces fired gunshots on Tuesday evening during a major operation along Queen’s Way in central Kampala, as police intensified a crackdown on suspected criminal gangs linked to a surge in street robberies.
The joint operation, conducted by the Uganda Police Force and sister security agencies, targeted drainage channels and hideouts believed to be used by suspected thieves operating around the city.
According to preliminary reports, more than 100 suspects were arrested during the two-day intelligence-led operation, which began on Easter Monday.
Security sources said the crackdown specifically targeted individuals linked to the recent wave of phone and bag snatching incidents around Clock Tower and surrounding areas.
“The suspects were found hiding in drainage channels and other blackspots. Several were arrested with sharp weapons including knives and pangas, as well as narcotic substances,” a security source said.
Witnesses reported hearing gunshots as security personnel moved in to flush out suspects who attempted to flee during the operation.
The arrests are part of broader ongoing efforts by police to dismantle organized urban criminal gangs and restore safety in the capital. Similar operations in recent months have targeted robbery hotspots and led to hundreds of arrests across the Kampala Metropolitan area.
Authorities say the suspects will be screened and charged accordingly, with investigations ongoing to establish links to wider criminal networks.
The latest operation comes amid growing concern from the public over increasing cases of street theft, particularly in busy city corridors.
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue sharing information that could help in identifying and apprehending criminal elements.
