Ugandans face Shs56m bond for US tourist and business visas

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced a new requirement for Ugandans applying for United States business and tourist visas, following Uganda’s inclusion in the US visa bond pilot programme.

In a public service announcement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said the change takes effect from January 21, 2026, and applies to applicants seeking B1/B2 visas through the US Embassy in Kampala.

“Uganda was added to the US visa bond pilot program,” the Ministry stated. “Visa applicants who are otherwise found eligible for a business/tourist (B1/B2) visa for travel to the United States will be required to post a bond before the visa can be issued.”

According to the announcement, the bond is intended to ensure compliance with US immigration rules. The Ministry explained that the money will be refunded in full if the traveller adheres to the visa conditions and leaves the United States before their authorised period of stay expires.

“The bond will be returned to the traveller if he or she complies with all conditions of the visa and departs the United States before the period of admission expires,” the Ministry said.

Uganda’s inclusion in the pilot programme means affected applicants should be prepared for additional financial requirements even after meeting standard visa eligibility criteria. The Ministry advised applicants to familiarise themselves with how the bond system works before starting or completing their visa applications.

The US visa bond pilot programme targets selected countries and is designed to encourage compliance with visa terms, particularly timely departure from the United States.

Further details on the programme and its operation are available through official US government channels, as referenced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The announcement has sparked interest among frequent travellers, students, and business people, with officials urging applicants to seek accurate information and plan accordingly to avoid delays in their travel arrangements.
