The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has warned broadcasters and online media practitioners against airing live coverage of riots, violent incidents, or the unofficial declaration of election results ahead of next week’s General Election.
Speaking at a joint media briefing with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance at the Uganda Media Centre, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo emphasised that any violations will be addressed in accordance with the law, including regulatory sanctions.
“The media should not be a tool for political abuse, violence, or lawlessness,” Mr Thembo said. “Live coverage of riots or violent incidents, incitement or hate speech, and the unofficial declaration of election results endanger lives and can destabilise the nation.”
The Executive Director also dismissed reports of a possible internet shutdown, clarifying that the UCC has not received any instructions to prepare for such a move.
The briefing comes amid heightened political activity and a surge of digital misinformation as the country approaches the elections. Both the UCC and the Ministry of ICT stressed the importance of responsible journalism and adherence to legal frameworks to maintain public order and national stability.
“Clarity, truth, and responsible broadcasting are not just necessary—they are our duty to the nation, to the law, and to the peace we all cherish,” Mr Thembo added.
The UCC reaffirmed that the declaration of election results remains the sole mandate of the Electoral Commission and that any dissemination of unverified or premature results is illegal under Ugandan law.
