Police hunt power vandals in Butaleja

The Uganda Police Force has launched investigations into a suspected racket behind the vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Butaleja District, following the theft of electrical wires from power poles in the area.

According to police, the incident occurred on December 14, 2025, at around 7:00 a.m., in Lubanga Cell, Bufujja Town Council. The Chairperson of Lubanga Cell received information from residents that unknown individuals had vandalised electricity wires connected to power poles. The matter was subsequently reported to Bufujja Police Station.

The Officer in Charge (OC) of Bufujja Police Station requested support from the K9 Unit to aid in the investigation. A police sniffer dog, K9 Vegas, was deployed to the scene and successfully tracked a human scent from the vandalised site.

The trail led officers to a semi-permanent house belonging to Esero Fred, located approximately 500 metres from the scene of the crime. However, the suspect was not found at home at the time of the operation.

A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of stolen electrical cable wires along with several other electronic items suspected to be stolen property.

Police say efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the suspect as investigations continue. The Uganda Police Force has reiterated its commitment to combating vandalism of critical infrastructure, warning that such acts disrupt essential services and attract severe legal consequences.
