KAMPALA — More than 70 suspects have been arrested in a series of intelligence-led operations targeting crime hotspots across Kampala Metropolitan South, police said on Monday.
The operations, conducted by the Uganda Police Force with support from other security agencies, focused on areas identified as common hideouts and waiting points for criminals.
According to police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, one of the key operations was carried out in the early hours of March 30 at around 1:47am under Kabalagala Police Division, covering Kampala Road and the Mukwano (Kibuli Flyover) area in Makindye Division.
“The operation targeted identified hotspots and suspected waiting points used by criminals who prey on vulnerable individuals, particularly women heading to markets in the early morning hours,” Owoyesigyire said.
He noted that the operation followed public concerns raised on social media about rising insecurity in the areas.
A total of seven suspects were arrested during the Kabalagala operation and have since been charged. They are expected to appear in court.
In a separate operation conducted on March 29, Nateete Police Division carried out a similar crackdown in Busega, Nalukolongo, and Kibumbiro, leading to the arrest of 64 suspects.
“The suspects have since been charged and arraigned before the KCCA Court following the completion of inquiries,” Owoyesigyire added.
Police said the operations are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety.
“We shall continue to intensify intelligence-led operations and strengthen community policing to ensure the safety and security of all residents,” he said, adding that the situation in the affected areas remains calm and under control.
