EC begins paying 2026 election allowances

KAMPALA — The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially confirmed that the payment of allowances for temporary election officials who served during the recently concluded 2025/2026 General Elections is now underway.

In a press statement released this week, the Commission sought to ease the growing anxiety among thousands of individuals who were recruited to manage the various stages of the high-stakes electoral process. These temporary staff, ranging from polling assistants to supervisors, have been waiting for their remuneration since the conclusion of the polls in January.

A Commitment to Settle Arrears

The EC’s communication was clear and reassuring, aimed at addressing the concerns of those who have been calling for clarity on their payments.

“The Electoral Commission assures all eligible officials that their allowances will be paid,” the statement noted, emphasizing that the process is ongoing and systematic.

The Commission has urged patience as they verify and process payments for the vast network of personnel deployed across the country. Historically, the scale of Uganda’s general elections—which involved over 35,000 polling stations this cycle—presents a significant logistical challenge in reconciling attendance lists and bank details for tens of thousands of temporary workers.

Transparency and Logistics

To ensure the funds reach the intended recipients, the Commission has reinforced that payments are being made through established official channels. Eligible officials are advised to keep their provided contact and bank information active to avoid further delays.

This move comes at a critical time as the nation transitions from the electoral season back into a regular administrative cycle. The prompt settlement of these allowances is seen as a vital step in maintaining the trust of the citizens who stepped up to facilitate the democratic process.

What Happens Next?

While a specific completion date for all payments has not been set, the Commission’s proactive update suggests a commitment to clearing the backlog. Officials who may have experienced issues with their payments are expected to be guided by their respective district returning officers once the primary disbursement phase is completed.
