Kampala — Dr Sarah Birete, the Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), is expected to be produced before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Buganda Road today, police have confirmed.
According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, journalists and members of the public interested in the matter have been advised to follow proceedings at the court as the case unfolds.
“I can confirm she is within court premises now,” said Owoyesigyire.
While police have not yet publicly detailed the specific charges, Dr Birete’s court appearance comes at a time of heightened political and civic tension ahead of Uganda’s 2026 General Elections, particularly around debates on voter conduct, polling station management, and citizens’ rights.
Civil Society Under Scrutiny
Dr Birete’s appearance in court adds to growing concerns among civil society groups about shrinking civic space, arrests of activists, and increased scrutiny of organisations engaged in governance, constitutionalism, and electoral accountability.
Over the past weeks, several activists and opposition figures have been arrested or summoned by security agencies, fueling claims that the pre-election period is becoming increasingly restrictive.
Observers say Dr Birete’s case will be closely watched as a test of how the justice system handles matters involving civil liberties, constitutional advocacy, and political expression during the election season.
Owoyesigyire said further details would be communicated through official channels as the matter progresses.
