Johannesburg— An aircraft belonging to Uganda Airlines was forced to return to OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday morning after a bird strike shattered part of the cockpit windscreen mid-flight.
Flight UR713 had departed Johannesburg en route to Entebbe when the incident occurred about 45 minutes after take-off, at an altitude of approximately 31,900 feet, according to airline and passenger accounts.
In a statement, the airline confirmed the mid-air disruption and praised the crew’s response.
“This morning of 3rd April 2026, our flight from Johannesburg (JNB) to Entebbe (EBB) experienced a disruption approximately 45 minutes after take-off due to a bird strike, which resulted in a shattered windscreen,” Uganda Airlines said.
“The flight crew made the decision to return to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB), where the aircraft landed safely. We confirm that all guests and crew are safe,” the statement added, emphasizing that “the safety and security of our passengers and staff remain our highest priority.”
Passengers on board described tense moments following the incident but commended the captain for remaining calm and in control.

One passenger, Simon Kaheru, who shared photos of the damaged windscreen, said the crew handled the situation with professionalism.
“The captain was calm and composed throughout. You could tell everything was under control despite the scare,” Kaheru posted, adding that the aircraft made a steady return and safe landing after about 70 minutes.
There were no injuries reported among passengers or crew. The airline said affected travellers were rebooked onto alternative flights to continue their journeys.
Aviation experts note that while bird strikes are not uncommon, incidents involving cockpit windscreen damage are rare and require decisive action from flight crews.
Passengers have since hailed the captain as a hero, citing his professionalism and skill in safely navigating the aircraft back to Johannesburg following the mid-air emergency.
Uganda Airlines said it is working with relevant authorities to assess the incident and ensure continued safety compliance.
