Tayebwa defends record, calls for party unity

KAMPALA, Uganda — Thomas Tayebwa has defended the performance of the 11th Parliament, saying its leadership has delivered on its constitutional mandate while urging members of the ruling party to maintain unity ahead of the upcoming parliamentary leadership vote.

Speaking to journalists at his home in Kigo, Tayebwa said the current leadership under Anita Annet Among has made notable progress in legislation, oversight, and representation.

He welcomed the endorsement of the current parliamentary leadership by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, describing it as recognition of the work done during the term.

“Most of the issues where people wanted to judge us are outside the core mandate,” Tayebwa said, noting that Parliament had strengthened its role in appropriations, oversight, and passing key legislation.

The Deputy Speaker also called on members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to respect the party’s official position as discussions on parliamentary leadership continue.

While acknowledging that some MPs may choose to contest leadership positions, Tayebwa emphasized the need for party cohesion.

“I have a strong conviction that it is NRM that will produce the Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” he said.

He further stressed that effective cooperation between the Speaker and Deputy Speaker is essential to deliver on the party’s legislative agenda and serve the interests of Ugandans.
