Operations at Muwema & Co. Advocates were disrupted on Friday after the firm was evicted from its rented offices in Kololo over alleged rent arrears totaling USD 372,300 (about Shs1.34 billion).

The property owner, Downtown Investments Ltd, reportedly instructed court bailiffs to repossess the premises after months of unpaid rent.

During the enforcement exercise, bailiffs and security personnel were deployed at the building as the landlord regained control of the property. Office items belonging to the law firm were reportedly moved out as part of the repossession process.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the rent arrears accumulated over an extended period, prompting the landlord to pursue legal action to recover the debt and reclaim the property.

The offices, located in Kololo—one of Kampala’s prime commercial areas—had served as the firm’s operational base for several years.

The development has attracted attention within Uganda’s legal fraternity given the firm’s prominence in handling major legal matters and representing high-profile clients.

Officials from the law firm had not issued a formal response by the time of publication.
