Kampala, Uganda — The fifth edition of Uganda’s first World Athletics Label Road Race, the Mt Rwenzori Marathon, is set for August 22, 2026, in Kasese, promising scenic highland views and a route that crosses the equator. Early registrations indicate strong international interest, with participants from seven countries already signed up.

Organizers report that last year’s marathon drew over 5,000 runners, and early signs suggest this year could match that turnout. Amos Wekesa, team leader for the event, expressed optimism about the registrations:

“Early bird opened on Friday the 20th March, and so far seven countries are represented in the registration. The numbers won’t change a lot from last year due to accommodations growth! Signs are good, very good!”

Registration Details

Early bird registration fees are UGX 50,000 ($13 USD) for East African runners and $50 for international participants, available until July 1. Registration is convenient, with online options including mobile money, cards, and other digital methods.

Wekesa highlighted the marathon as a platform for young talent:

“Caught up with Uganda Exposed to discuss opportunities they can explore during the Rwenzori Marathon. These young men and women are hungry for success, and that’s what Uganda needs. We shall outline what each is going to do.”

A Competitive Field

The 2025 edition saw record times, including Bernard Cheptoch’s winning 2:21:41, and organizers hope the 2026 race will continue that tradition of competitive performances. With early interest from multiple countries and easy registration options, the Mt Rwenzori Marathon is positioning itself as a premier road race in East Africa.

The event combines athletic excellence with tourism, allowing runners to experience Uganda’s spectacular Rwenzori highlands while competing at an internationally recognized marathon.
