Former minister Kweronda Ruhembwa Dies

Uganda is mourning the death of veteran politician Kweronda Ruhembwa, a former Member of Parliament and minister who served in several key government roles.

Ruhembwa, who represented Kajara Constituency in the Constituent Assembly and later in Parliament from 1996 to 2001, passed away on Saturday, marking the end of a long public service career that spanned legislative, executive, and diplomatic assignments.

During his time in Parliament, Ruhembwa was appointed State Minister for Education, where he played a role in expanding access to school infrastructure. He is particularly remembered for working alongside Francis Babu to introduce Hydraform brick-making technology, which enabled the construction of cost-effective school buildings across various parts of the country.

Ruhembwa also served as Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, contributing to Uganda’s economic management during a critical period of post-reform stabilization in the late 1990s.

Following his parliamentary career, he was appointed Uganda’s ambassador to South Africa, where he served for several years, strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.

Leaders and members of the public have begun paying tribute, describing him as a dedicated public servant whose contributions to education and national development left a lasting impact.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.

May his soul rest in peace.
