KYENJOJO — A striking new church building in Kyenjojo District is drawing attention not only for its impressive structure but also for what it represents to the local community.
The Our Lady of Salvation Butiiti Catholic Church, constructed at an estimated cost of Shs5.5 billion, is nearing completion in Butiiti Parish and is fast becoming one of the most notable landmarks in the area.
Beyond its remarkable size and architectural presence rising above the rolling hills, residents say the church stands as a powerful symbol of unity, shared sacrifice and enduring faith.
“This parish dates back to 1904, and for all those years Christians have worshipped in a small church that could no longer accommodate the growing number of believers,” said Rev. Fr. Benard Bitekerezo, the parish priest. He explained that on major feast days, many worshippers were left outside, listening to Mass from a distance.
The project, which took several years to complete, was funded through community contributions, support from well-wishers and friends of the church — a process that many parishioners say strengthened local bonds.
“This church tells a story of sacrifice,” said John Bright, a local member of the parish. “Everyone here contributed something, whether big or small. It shows what we can achieve when we work together as one family.”
District leaders also see potential benefits beyond worship. Kyenjojo District Council Speaker Ronald Karamagi said the church’s unique design and cultural significance could attract religious tourism, bringing economic opportunities to the region.
The grand opening ceremony — expected to attract worshippers from across the country — is still being finalised, with local leaders hopeful that the event will mark a new chapter for spiritual life and community development in Kyenjojo District.
