KAMPALA — Ugandans at home and abroad have taken to social media to send birthday and Valentine’s Day messages to veteran opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, whose birthday falls on February 14, as concerns continue to grow over his health and prolonged detention.
Among those who sent messages was Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS and Besigye’s wife, who posted a short but symbolic message on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
“Love is courage and hope. Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️,” Byanyima wrote.
The message, widely interpreted as a tribute to Besigye, comes at a time when his supporters and rights activists continue to demand his release and access to proper medical care.
Other opposition supporters and political activists also used the day to send messages describing Besigye as a symbol of resilience, courage and sacrifice in Uganda’s struggle for democratic change, with several calling for prayers and solidarity as he spends another birthday under confinement.
Besigye, a long-time critic of President Yoweri Museveni, remains in detention following his controversial arrest, which opposition figures have described as politically motivated.
Case Update
Besigye’s case has continued to draw both local and international attention, with human rights organisations repeatedly raising alarm over his reported deteriorating health condition and alleged denial of adequate medical attention.
In recent weeks, opposition leaders and civil society actors have renewed calls for authorities to either produce him in a civilian court and grant him a fair hearing or release him unconditionally.
The European Parliament, in its recently adopted resolution on Uganda’s post-election situation, also referenced Besigye’s detention, alleging that he was illegally rendered from Kenya and has been held for over a year. The lawmakers said he is “severely ill” and reportedly being denied medical care, while facing trial for treason.
The resolution urged Ugandan authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all those it described as arbitrarily detained, including Besigye, and to stop using military courts to prosecute civilians.
However, Ugandan authorities have previously defended security operations against opposition figures, insisting that suspects are arrested based on evidence of criminal conduct and threats to national security.
Supporters Call for Justice
Besigye’s supporters say his continued detention reflects growing political repression and shrinking civic space in Uganda, particularly following the January 2026 general elections.
As messages poured in on Valentine’s Day, many described the occasion as bittersweet, noting that Besigye was spending his birthday away from family and friends.
Byanyima’s message, though brief, sparked renewed conversation online, with many praising her for what they called unwavering support and courage amid difficult circumstances.
Besigye, a former physician and four-time presidential candidate, remains one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures and has previously faced repeated arrests and prosecutions over the years.
As his birthday messages continue to circulate, calls for his freedom and accountability in his case are expected to intensify in the coming days.
