Rwanda,  DR Congo tensions boil over hotel security incident in U.S.

Diplomatic tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have escalated following a disputed security incident involving the Congolese First Lady in the United States.

Officials in Kinshasa claim that individuals believed to be linked to Rwandan operatives attempted to gain access to a hotel room where First Lady Denise Nyakeru Tshisekedi was staying during an official visit to Washington, D.C. The alleged intrusion has been described by Congolese authorities as a serious security breach.

According to accounts circulating in Congolese media and official channels, unidentified individuals attempted to enter restricted areas of the hotel, prompting concern among the First Lady’s security team. The incident has since been framed by the DRC as part of a broader pattern of hostility linked to ongoing regional tensions.

However, Rwandan officials have strongly denied the allegations, dismissing them as misleading. Kigali maintains that the confrontation was the result of a misunderstanding involving access to shared hotel facilities, including an elevator, rather than any targeted operation.

The incident comes at a time of already strained relations between the two երկրների, which have been at odds over security and conflict issues in eastern Congo. The DRC has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing rebel groups operating in its territory—claims Rwanda denies.

Analysts warn that even minor diplomatic incidents risk inflaming tensions further, particularly as both countries have recently engaged in U.S.-mediated efforts aimed at easing hostilities.

Neither government has announced formal diplomatic action over the hotel incident, but the exchange of accusations highlights the fragility of relations and the potential for escalation.
