The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has a new Deputy Commander of the Land Forces following a promotion by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed Deputy Commander of UPDF Land Forces. The promotion officially took effect in December 2025 following the illness of Major General Francis Takirwa, who previously held the position.
“Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga is promoted to Major General and appointed Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces,” the UPDF confirmed in a statement.
Tragically, Major General Takirwa passed away after a period of illness. Major General Ssemwanga now assumes full responsibilities as his successor.
The appointment reflects continued leadership transitions within the UPDF’s top command and underscores the strategic importance of the Land Forces in Uganda’s defence structure.
General Muhoozi described Major General Ssemwanga’s appointment as a move to ensure stability and continuity in the UPDF leadership following the loss of Major General Takirwa.
Major General Ssemwanga, a seasoned officer with years of military experience, is expected to oversee the operational and administrative functions of the Land Forces while supporting the CDF in implementing strategic defence initiatives.
The UPDF and government officials have extended condolences to the family and colleagues of Major General Takirwa, highlighting his contributions to Uganda’s military service.
This promotion is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the UPDF command structure and maintain operational readiness across all branches.
