The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has announced the full restoration of public internet access across the country following the conclusion of the 2026 General Elections, urging citizens to use the connectivity responsibly.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo said the temporary restriction of internet services was a “necessary and proportionate step” to curb misinformation, electoral interference, and incitement during a sensitive period, while ensuring essential services remained protected.
“Following the successful conclusion of the elections and a careful assessment by the Inter-Agency Security Committee, we have directed the immediate restoration of public internet access across Uganda, effective 18th January 2026,” Thembo said.
He stressed that while connectivity has been restored for browsing, educational resources, government services, financial transactions, and email, social media and messaging platforms remain temporarily restricted to prevent misuse that could threaten public order.
“The internet is a powerful tool for development, education, business, and staying connected with loved ones — let us use it to build, not to destroy,” he said. “Avoid sharing or amplifying unverified information, hate speech, inflammatory content, or anything that could incite violence or disturb the peace we have all worked to preserve.”
Thembo reminded Ugandans that digital freedom comes with responsibility, warning that misuse of online platforms can have serious consequences.
“Responsible digital citizenship means verifying facts before sharing, respecting the views of others, and contributing to national unity rather than division,” he said. “Any attempt to use the restored internet to organise or incite disorder, spread falsehoods, or undermine national stability will not be tolerated.”
He also thanked mobile operators for their compliance, the media for responsible reporting, and the public for their patience during the temporary restriction.
“The restoration of public internet marks an important step forward as we move beyond the election period,” Thembo said. “Together, we can continue building the Uganda we all deserve.”
The Commission confirmed that it will continue to monitor the digital environment closely and provide updates on any further adjustments as needed.
