Senegal claimed the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 title after defeating hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time in a dramatic final played in Rabat, securing their second continental crown.
The final remained deadlocked at 0–0 after 90 minutes before Pape Gueye emerged as the hero, scoring the winning goal three minutes into extra time with a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Morocco had been inches away from sealing victory in regulation time after earning a late penalty through a VAR review. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edward Mendy produced a crucial save to deny Brahim Diaz, pushing the contest into extra time.
Senegal started the match on the front foot, creating the clearer chances in the opening half. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was forced into early action, first parrying Gueye’s header from a corner before denying Iliman Ndiaye in a one-on-one situation.
The hosts responded with increased urgency, and Nayef Aguerd nearly broke the deadlock before halftime when he failed to connect with Abdessamad Ezzalzouli’s dangerous cross.
Morocco intensified the pressure after the break. Ayoub El Kaabi missed a clear opportunity after being played through by Bilal El Khannouss, while Senegal remained a threat on the counterattack.
With the score still level late in normal time, Senegal substitute Ibrahim Mbaye came close to scoring in the 89th minute, but Bounou again came to Morocco’s rescue with a fine save.
Extra time proved decisive. A quick turnover in midfield allowed Sadio Mané to set up Idrissa Gana Gueye, who fed Pape Gueye. Showing composure and strength, the midfielder advanced before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Bounou.
Morocco pressed desperately for an equaliser, with Brahim Diaz and Youssef En-Nesyri both going close, but Senegal’s defence held firm to secure a historic victory.
Pape Gueye was named TotalEnergies Man of the Match and described the win as a moment of immense pride.
“It was a very difficult match,” Gueye said. “After the penalty miss, we stayed focused and played our football. Scoring in a final is special, and winning a second AFCON title for Senegal makes it even more meaningful.”
The victory confirms Senegal’s place among Africa’s football elite, as they lift their second AFCON trophy and add another golden chapter to their football history.
