Man charged over forged presidential letter in Uganda railways job scam

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Anti-Corruption Unit under State House, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has arraigned Arinda Nicholas before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of forgery, uttering a false document, and obtaining money by false pretence.

According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, Arinda appeared in court this afternoon and was subsequently remanded until 9th March 2026.

Prosecutors allege that Arinda, together with another suspect who is still at large, fraudulently created a false appointment letter dated 4th December 2024 bearing reference number PO/23, allegedly appointing Mr. Nagwomu Alfred as Managing Director of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC).

Authorities say the forged document was falsely presented as having been signed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, which investigators say was untrue.

The accused is further alleged to have extorted more than UGX 20 million from Mr. Nagwomu, claiming the money was meant to facilitate and secure the appointment.

The Anti-Corruption Unit said the matter is part of ongoing efforts to crack down on individuals exploiting government offices and forging documents to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

Investigations are still ongoing to apprehend the second suspect.
