Former ASUL Vice Chancellor Prof Cula found dead

Lira City, Uganda — Former Vice Chancellor of All Saints University Lango (ASUL), Prof Andrew Anthony Cula, has been found dead at his residence in Lira City, in a development that has shocked the academic community in northern Uganda.

Prof Cula’s body was discovered on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at his home in Teso Bar, West Division, according to university officials and close associates.

Preliminary reports indicate that the retired professor reportedly fell ill during the night and attempted to seek assistance, but help arrived too late.

Sources at ASUL confirmed that Prof Cula had been living alone in Lira City, while his family was based in Kampala. His body has since been transferred to Lira University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where it is being held pending a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Prof Cula retired in November 2025 after serving as Vice Chancellor of ASUL, a private university established in 2008. During his leadership, he was credited for championing institutional growth and advocating for government financial support to private universities that struggled due to economic hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With an academic background in public health and microbiology, Prof Cula was widely respected for his dedication to higher education and mentorship of students in the region.

Education stakeholders and colleagues have described his death as a major loss to Uganda’s academic fraternity.
