Police maintain deployment at Bobi Wine’s home

ACP Rusoke Kituuma

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed that security personnel will continue to maintain deployment at the home of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, despite authorities stating that he has not committed any offence.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said officers have been stationed at Kyagulanyi’s residence since January 15, describing the operation as a preventive measure based on national security considerations.

“The police presence is based on national security considerations,” Rusoke said, adding that the deployment will remain in place for an unspecified period depending on ongoing security assessments.

No Charges, No Arrest

Rusoke emphasised that Kyagulanyi is not under arrest and has not been accused of any crime.

He explained that if investigators require information from the opposition leader, he would be formally invited to record a statement through established legal procedures, rather than being subjected to informal or unlawful detention.

The police clarification comes amid increasing public speculation over the purpose and legality of the prolonged security presence at the NUP leader’s home.

Mixed Reactions

The continued deployment has attracted criticism from opposition politicians, civil society groups and supporters of Kyagulanyi, some of whom have questioned its necessity and duration.

Critics argue that prolonged security operations at the residence of a political leader raise concerns over civil liberties and political freedoms.

However, security officials insist the deployment is strictly preventive and aimed at ensuring stability and public order.

Background

Kyagulanyi, a former presidential candidate, has previously faced heavy security deployment at his residence during politically sensitive periods, including election seasons, public demonstrations and major national events. Such deployments have often drawn scrutiny from rights organisations and political observers.

Situation Under Review

Police say the deployment remains under review and that any decision to scale down or withdraw personnel will depend on evolving security assessments.

As of now, authorities say there are no charges, summons, or formal restrictions against Kyagulanyi beyond the continued presence of security officers at his home.
