Lamu, Kenya — Thousands of high-end vehicles destined for Dubai have been offloaded at Kenya’s Lamu Port due to disruptions caused by ongoing conflict in the Middle East, officials confirmed.
Port authorities said over 4,000 cars, including luxury Porsches shipped from Japan, were unloaded from two vessels after shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz were affected and Dubai’s Jebel Ali port suffered air strikes. The vehicles will remain in Lamu until regional conditions stabilize.
Officials added that the port is preparing for increased traffic, with another shipment of 5,000 cars expected soon. “We are scaling up operations to handle the overflow and ensure the vehicles are secure while awaiting clearance,” a port spokesperson said.
Lamu, part of a regional transport corridor project, is increasingly being positioned as a major African shipping hub. Analysts note that diversions like this could accelerate its development as a strategic alternative to Middle Eastern ports.
