The High Court has granted bail to Catholic priest Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira, who faces charges of allegedly laundering Shs500 million.
The ruling was delivered by Lady Justice Victoria Nakintu, who found that the accused met all legal requirements for bail, including presenting credible and substantial sureties.
Justice Nakintu noted that Fr. Ssekabira had shown a willingness to comply with court directives, and there was no sufficient evidence suggesting he would interfere with investigations or abscond during the trial.
The judge emphasised that bail is a constitutional right and that the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The priest was released on bail under conditions expected to include regular court appearances and adherence to any restrictions imposed by the court. Fr. Ssekabira has denied all allegations against him.
According to the prosecution, the charges relate to financial transactions totaling Shs500 million, which investigators allege were part of a money laundering scheme. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and additional evidence is expected to be presented during the trial.
The case has attracted public attention due to Fr. Ssekabira’s position as a religious leader. Legal analysts note that the proceedings will test both the strength of the prosecution’s evidence and the protections provided under Uganda’s financial crimes laws.
The matter will return to court on a date to be communicated as hearings continue.
