KAMPALA – Concerns have emerged on social media over the alleged disappearance of former Ethics and Integrity Minister Dr Miria Matembe, following unverified reports claiming that security operatives raided her home in Luzira.
The claims, which circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter), suggest that Dr. Matembe, a prominent women’s rights activist and former Member of the Constituent Assembly, was taken away following criticism she reportedly made against the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. However, no official confirmation has been issued by security agencies regarding any raid, arrest, or detention.
One post by activist Lina Zedriga Waru expressed solidarity, stating: “Mother Dr. Hon Miria, the beloved daughter of Mother Mary, we stand with you in prayers and solidarity be not afraid all these will come to pass!”
The National Unity Platform (NUP) also referenced the situation in a statement posted on X, saying it was “concerning that a senior citizen and former minister… can be hounded in such a manner,” although it did not confirm any official details of the alleged incident.
As of publication time, neither the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), nor the Ministry of Internal Affairs had issued any statement confirming reports of a raid or explaining Dr. Matembe’s whereabouts.
Dr. Matembe, who served as Minister of Ethics and Integrity and is widely known for her advocacy on governance and women’s rights, has in the past been vocal on issues of accountability and political freedoms in Uganda.
Human rights observers note that claims circulating on social media should be treated with caution until verified by official sources or credible media outlets. Similar incidents in recent years have often sparked public concern before authorities later clarified the circumstances.
The situation remains unclear, with growing calls online for clarification and assurance regarding Dr. Matembe’s safety and whereabouts.
